Rom 07
Rome 07
7 1 An ignoratis, fratres (scientibus enim legem loquor), quia lex in homine dominatur quanto tempore vivit ?
7 1 Do you not know, brothers (for I speak to those who know the law), because the law dominates a man how long he lives?
2 For a woman who is under her husband is bound by the law while her husband is alive; but if her husband is dead, she is freed from the husband's law.
3 Therefore, while a man is alive, she will be called an adulteress if she has been with another man: but if her husband has died, she is freed from the husband's law, so that she will not be an adulteress if she has been with another man.
5 For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sins, which were by the law, worked in our members, to bring forth fruit in death.
6 But now we are freed from the law of death, in which we were held, so that we serve in the newness of the spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.
7 Quid ergo dicemus ?
lex peccatum est ?
Is the law a sin?
Absit.
But I did not know sin except through the law: for I did not know concupiscence unless the law said: You shall not covet.
8 But when the opportunity was accepted, sin worked in me every concupiscence by commandment.
Sine lege enim peccatum mortuum erat.
For without the law sin was dead.
9 But I lived without the law for a time: but when the commandment came, sin revived.
10 But I died: and it was found to me that the commandment, which was for life, was this for death.
11 For sin, having received the occasion by the commandment, seduced me, and by it killed me.
12 Itaque lex quidem sancta, et mandatum sanctum, et justum, et bonum.
12 And so the law is indeed holy, and the commandment is holy, and just, and good.
13 What is the good, then, that death has happened to me?
Absit.
But sin, in order that sin may appear, death was wrought for me through good: that sinning beyond measure may be sinned by the commandment.
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
15 For what I do, I do not understand: for I do not what I want to be good, but what I hate to be evil, I do that.
16 But if I don't want to do something, I do it: I agree with the law, because it is good.
17 But now I no longer work on it, but sin dwells in me.
18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh.
For to will is next to me: but to perfect the good, I do not find.
19 For I do not because I want good, but because I do not want evil, I do this.
20 But if what I do not want, I do it: I no longer work it, but that which dwells in me, sin.
21 Invenio igitur legem, volenti mihi facere bonum, quoniam mihi malum adjacet : 22 condelector enim legi Dei secundum interiorem hominem : 23 video autem aliam legem in membris meis, repugnantem legi mentis meæ, et captivantem me in lege peccati, quæ est in membris meis.
21 Therefore I find the law, wanting to do me good, because evil is next to me: 22 for I am enamored of the law of God according to the inner man: 23 but I see another law in my members, contrary to the law of my mind, and ensnaring me in the law of sin, which is in my members .
24 Infelix ego homo, quis me liberabit de corpore mortis hujus ?
24 I am a miserable man, who will deliver me from the body of this death?
25 gratia Dei per Jesum Christum Dominum nostrum.
25 the grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Igitur ego ipse mente servio legi Dei : carne autem, legi peccati.
Therefore I myself serve the law of God in my mind: but in the flesh, the law of sin.
