Matt. 20
Matt. 20
Mat. 20
1 Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam.
||||||||first||to hire|||vineyard|
1 The Kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
||||workers||a denarius|daily|||||
2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
|||the hour|third||||||idle||||||||||||just|||
3 And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the market, 4 and he said to them: Go you also into my vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.
5 Illi autem abierunt.
5 But they went away.
||||sixth||ninth||||similarly
Again, however, he went out around the sixth and ninth hour: and did similarly.
6 Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis : Quid hic statis tota die otiosi ?
|the eleventh||||||||||||are you standing|||idle
6 Around the eleventh hour, however, he went out and found others standing, and said to them: Why are you standing here all day idle?
7 Dicunt ei : Quia nemo nos conduxit.
|||||hired
|late||||||of the vineyard|to the steward||call||||||beginning||the last|||the first
8 And when it was late, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward: Call the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last until the first.
|||||||had come|they received|each|
||||they thought|||||receiving||||||
10 And when they were the first to come, they thought that they would receive more: and they themselves also received every penny.
|receiving|||||||||||equal|||you have made|||the burden|||heat
11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the father of the family, 12 saying: These last did it in one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the weight of the day and the heat.
13 At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit : Amice, non facio tibi injuriam : nonne ex denario convenisti mecum ?
||||||Friend||I do||injury||||you agreed|
13 But he answering one of them said: Friend, I do you no injury: did you not agree with me for a denarius?
||||||||||last||||
14 Take what is yours and go: I want to give to this last one as well as to you.
15 Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere ?
15 Or am I not allowed to do what I want?
an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum ?
Is your eye envious because I am good?
16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi.
16 So the last will be first, and the first last.
Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.
|||called|||chosen
For many are called, but few are chosen.
|||Jerusalem|||||||||we are going up|||||will be betrayed||||||||to death||||||to them||to be scourged||to be crucified||||
17 And Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them: 18 Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death, 19 and will deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, and beaten, and crucified, and on the third day he will rise again.
||||||||||adoring||seeking|||
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, worshiping and asking something from him.
21 Qui dixit ei : Quid vis ?
He said to her: What do you want?
||||may sit||||||||||||the left|||
She said to him: Say that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand, and one at your left in your kingdom.
22 Respondens autem Jesus, dixit : Nescitis quid petatis.
||||you do not know||
Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum ?
|to drink||||about to drink|
Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?
Dicunt ei : Possumus.
||we can
They said to him: We can.
|||||you will drink|to sit|||||||||||||to whom|it is prepared||||
23 He said to them: You will indeed drink my cup; but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give to you, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.
|||angry||||brothers
||||||||you know|||of the nations|rule||||greater|||exercise||
25 But Jesus called them to himself and said: You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them: and those who are greater exercise authority over them.
||||||||||||||minister||||||||||
26 It shall not be so among you: but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant: 27 and whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave.
|||||to be served||to serve|||||redemption||
28 Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.
|as they were leaving||||followed||||||||||||||||||||||son|
29 And as they were going out from Jericho, a great crowd followed him. 30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the way heard that Jesus was passing by; and they cried out, saying: Lord, have mercy on us, son of David.
31 Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent.
||was rebuking|||
31 But the crowd rebuked them so that they should be silent.
At illi magis clamabant, dicentes : Domine, miserere nostri, fili David.
|||were crying||||||
But they cried out all the more, saying: Lord, have mercy on us, son of David.
|stood|||||||||||
32 And Jesus stood and called them, and said: What do you want me to do for you?
33 Dicunt illi : Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri.
||||may be opened||
33 They said to him: Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
34 Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum.

34 And Jesus, having compassion on them, touched their eyes.
Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.
And immediately they saw him, and followed him.
